The History of my area

This house is over 100 years old and was lived in by the owner of my house's grandparents

Around the early 1700 a gentleman who was a ship inspector came into my little area that I live and fell in love with it. He decided that this was where he wanted to settle down. So he bought the home that I live in(pictured above) and applied for a license with the King of Norway to be able to sell alcohol in his establishment. (The license hangs framed in our front entry along with some of the gentleman's swords). They served food and drink down stairs and people could get a room upstairs. The business was contained in three parts of the house (which I live in) his family and people who worked for him lived in the other 2 parts (where another family lives). He was a man before his times. Our harbor was the first harbor off the North sea so the ships would pull into here to stock up on supplies before then moved farther up the coast. It was also the last harbor before they left for the North sea and a long journey. So the gentleman decided to establish a business here to accommodate everyone who came into the harbor. He provide many services.

This is a small house that we use as a storage shed. This small house was the wash house where they washed all the bedding, clothing and anything else that needed to be kept clean.

This was where the original stables was. It has since been restored. The sailor had horses, and buggies for people to rent when they came here so that they could get around.
This was a bakery where he developed a recipe for some bread type crackers that would keep at sea for many months. They made it here in this little shed.

The original family still owns much of the area and many of the homes here. The sister to my landlord lives in a house kitty corner from mine. (The first picture on this blog) The mother lives above me in a smaller home that was built for her once my home was taken over by her son. The brother owns apartments where the original fish houses were. The fish houses were used when fishing was the number one industry here. They would catch the fish bring them back to the houses and then clean, salt and hand the herring to dry. There is rich heritage in this area and a family that has chosen to stay and continue the legacy.
